Heidenheim Abbey is a former Benedictine monastery founded in 752 by Saint Wunibald, abbot of the monastery, and his brother Willibald, Bishop of Eichstätt, as a missionary post. After Willibald's death, his sister, Saint Walburga, took over the management of the monastery as a double monastery for men and women. The first church was built and consecrated in 778. From 878 to 1188, a new Romanesque building with a nave and transept was constructed as St. Wunibald's Minster, which was expanded with a Gothic choir in 1363. St. Wunibald's Minster contains the Walburga grave monument with Walburgis's grave and gravestone from around 1200, and the tomb of St. Wunibald from 1484.

On the eastern shore there are some lovely beer gardens and even a section of beach where dogs are allowed. The path around the lake is paved and in places separated for cyclists and pedestrians.

All three lakes together have a storage capacity of 154 million cubic meters and a water surface of 12.1 million square meters. The Brombachsee is the heart of the Franconian Lake District, an artificial lake landscape used for tourism and water management. It is the largest lake in Franconia and the second largest reservoir in Germany by area. It is named after its outflow, the Brombach. The reservoirs were created in the 1970s as part of the water regulation of the Main-Danube Canal and to supply water to water-poor northern Bavaria as well as for local recreation and tourism. When there is flooding at the Gern gauge near Ornbau, water is fed into the Altmühlsee via the Altmühl feeder. There it is temporarily stored and when the water level is exceeded it is released into the Kleiner Brombachsee via the Altmühl overpass. From there, the water flows first via the Great Brombachsee and the Brombach into the Swabian Rezat, near Georgensgmünd into the Rednitz and then on to Nuremberg, before reaching the Main via the Regnitz. In this way, water that would normally flow into the Danube via the Altmühl is diverted, if necessary, across the European main watershed into the river system of the Rhine-Main area. The construction project was approved by the Bavarian State Parliament on July 16, 1970 on the initiative of MP Ernst Lechner and carried out in several construction stages by the Nuremberg Dam Construction Office.
