The heathland, over 9 km long and 1 km wide, lies on the private firing range of the Rheinmetall company, where weapons are tested. The area is barely accessible and, outside of firing range operations, may only be entered or driven on the red and white marked paths. Despite its military use, rare animal species have found refuge here.

The Misselhorn Heath unfolds an almost mystical atmosphere as its vast expanses spread out in gentle waves of heather and silver grass. During the flowering season, the landscape transforms into a shimmering sea of violet and purple, interspersed with the deep green silhouettes of gnarled juniper bushes. Light veils of mist, hovering over the sandy soil in the early morning, lend the heath an air of mystery, as if it were guarding an ancient secret. Those who glide along the quiet paths by bicycle are immersed in a world of colors, scents, and serene vastness – a landscape that both soothes and enchants, like a piece of timeless natural poetry. Experiencing this unique landscape by bicycle is particularly intense – a tranquil yet exhilarating highlight where the colors of the heath, the vastness of the plains, and the special atmosphere of the Misselhorn Heath become unforgettable.

The cycle path from Weesen to Lutterloh in the Southern Heath runs along good paths with a fine gravel surface, making it pleasant to ride on. The route leads through a variety of quiet pine forests and heathlands, as well as open fields. Away from major roads, the path offers plenty of peace and quiet, making it particularly suitable for leisurely cyclists. Forest edges and clearings invite you to take short breaks, making the tour not only practical but also scenically very attractive.

In Schmarbeck there are still large old heath farms with partly thatched barns

In Schmarbeck near Faßberg, two thatched sheepfolds have been preserved, standing side by side and representing a striking example of traditional heathland building culture. The older building, dating from the early 18th century, is a half-timbered barn on a fieldstone base with a hipped roof, while the younger one is a two-post structure with a fully hipped roof. For many generations, both buildings served as sheep farms. Their original construction and unique layout make them important testimonies to the agricultural use and architectural history of the Lüneburg Heath.

The Faßberg Airlift Museum commemorates the Berlin Airlift of 1948/49, during which large quantities of coal were flown from Faßberg to Berlin. Original documents, exhibits, and photographs are displayed in historic Nissen huts, railway carriages, and on the outdoor display featuring the Douglas C-47 "FASSBERG-FLYER." Segments of the Berlin Wall complement the exhibition. Open daily from April to October, the museum offers a striking insight into this significant chapter in post-war German history.

The route between Oberohe and Neu-Lutterloh leads along natural gravel paths through the Südheide Nature Park, past former diatomaceous earth mining areas, through heathland, and along pine forests. The route requires a sturdy bike (ideally a trekking, mountain, or gravel bike), while road bikes will be more of a challenge on the sandy sections. The route starts in Oberohe and ends in the area around Neu-Lutterloh, with the charming Südheide landscape accompanying the riders.

This has always been the unofficial clothing-optional beach on the island. Beautiful sand, plenty of pine trees, and plenty of space. Mostly quiet and relaxed bathers, mostly nude, but often clothed in high season. But people coexist well with one another.
