Lovely walking area and cycling here sometimes, but certainly not in the weekend and certainly not when it is beach weather. The quiet paths are fine but access roads are far from nice. Also recommended to go in the fall!

The slightly tapered brick tower made of red and yellow bricks stands prominently on a 31-meter-high dune crest. It was built in 1954.

What is particularly striking here is the simplicity and austerity of the memorial site.

Beautiful walk through the Dunea water catchment area. Admission is not free but for 2 euros per person you can buy a day ticket. Definitely worth the cost.

The Air Watchtower in Scheveningen was a watchtower used during the Cold War to spot enemy aircraft above the North Sea. 🏖️✈️ These towers were part of a network of air watchtowers throughout the Netherlands, set up by the Air Watch Corps (KLD). 🛡️ History and Purpose Construction and Use: The tower was built in the 1950s, in the middle of the Cold War. The purpose of the tower was to spot aircraft flying low with the naked eye, because radar had difficulty detecting low flyers. 👀 Location: The tower in Scheveningen was located near the coast, with a perfect view of the North Sea 🌊. Due to this strategic location, observers could spot enemy aircraft early. Volunteers: The towers were manned by volunteers who were specially trained to recognize aircraft and give their direction. 🕵️♂️ The observers were constantly on standby to monitor the airspace. 🏗️ Architecture The air watchtower in Scheveningen was built of concrete, with an open structure to have an unobstructed view in all directions. This tower was not very high, but still offered an excellent view of the coast and the hinterland. 💨 Current Status Many of these towers, including the one in Scheveningen, were demolished over time or fell into disrepair because they became redundant after the arrival of modern radar. The Scheveningen tower can unfortunately no longer be visited, but the memory of the function it fulfilled during the Cold War lives on. ✨ 🎖️ Historical Significance Although the air watchtower no longer has an active military purpose, it is a symbol of the defense during the Cold War and the efforts to protect the Netherlands against possible threats. The Scheveningen coastline was a strategic location for these types of defences, which today still tell fascinating stories about a tense period in world history.
