In 1519 Ludovico Borromeo settled on the islets in front of Cannero and Cannobio. Exactly five centuries later the works for the restoration of the Castles of Cannero restarted. In the Middle Ages, the robber baron brothers Mazzardi tyrannized the entire lake region until they kidnapped the daughters of Podesta from Cannobio and thus overstepped the mark. Filippo Visconti destroyed its fortifications in 1414 and had the robber barons executed.
