This path, lined with station houses that were built between 1755 and 1761, is a testament to craftsmanship and religious devotion. The small houses along the path house beautiful wooden figures depicting scenes from Christ's suffering. These depictions make the Stations of the Cross a contemplative journey that challenges hikers both physically and mentally. The climb, often difficult and steep, leads to a chapel on the Battenstein, a basalt rock, and symbolizes the path of penance and reflection. The individual stations of the Way of the Cross, which lead up or along the mountain, are reminiscent of the traditions of the medieval “Walk to the Seven Foot Falls”. This spiritual hike takes visitors not only through beautiful scenery, but also through the history of Christianity. Once at the top, the Battenstein pilgrimage chapel rewards hikers with its quiet atmosphere and the crucifixion group that stands in front of the chapel.
