Église réformée Saint-François, Lausanne Consecrated between 1260 and 1280, the Saint-François church in Lausanne is offering a series of events from January 15, 2022 to December 2022 to mark its 750th anniversary: concerts, visits, conferences, creations, worship services and times of exchange are on the program. The legacy of Saint Francis of Assisi is still very present in Lausanne. On the occasion of the 750th anniversary of the consecration of the church built by the Franciscans in Lausanne, the spirit of the "Poverello" continues to delight a wide audience. The faithful, of course, but also the many people attracted by the heritage and the cultural aspect of the place. Hôtel de Ville de Lausanne / Town Hall, Lausanne Overlooking the picturesque Place de la Palud from its bell tower, the imposing building of the Town Hall still houses the city administration. The Lausanne architect Abraham de Crousaz built it between 1673 and 1675 on the foundations of the hotels of the time. An important centre of life in Lausanne, it combined several functions: as a political place, it was both the seat and illustration of municipal power; it is an economic place, hosting the wheat market in its halls on the ground floor; a place of defence, the bells of its bell tower warn of danger. Much admired since its creation, the Town Hall is the most interesting achievement of Vaud architecture of the 17th century. Its main façade offers a particularly subtle composition. While the alignment of the bays and their cornices creates a striking and explicit horizontal effect, the vertical axis marked by the sculptural portal and the tower is implicitly reinforced by the rhythm of the windows, which become increasingly closer together as they approach the centre, and by the rhythm of the arcades, which become increasingly narrow. The roof, on the other hand, takes up the aesthetics of regional farmhouses in its shape, completing an original silhouette with a provincial touch. Escaliers du Marché / Market Stairs, Lausanne In the upper part, its course is interrupted by the rue Pierre-Viret, which was built in 1911 as an extension of the Pont Bessières and then artificially restored by the construction of an underpass in 1975. On a square to the right of the stairs, which is shaded by trees below the rue Pierre-Viret, the market square, from which it owes its name, was located until the 14th century. The row of houses bordering the stairs to the east, with its boutiques and cafés, represents an impressive, exceptional ensemble that stretches in a dynamic development from the Place de la Palud to the rue Pierre-Viret. Some elements date back to the 16th century, e.g. the lower floors at no. 17 with their old pointed arch windows. At the top, the bell tower of the cathedral extends the spectacular ascending movement. Château St-Maire / Saint-Maire Castle, Lausanne The building, in the solid style of the city castles of the time, still indicates that it served both residential and military purposes. Since the Bernese did not want to hand the castle over to the people of Lausanne in 1536, they housed their governor there. It has been the seat of the cantonal government since 1803. The castle's defensive floor is particularly noteworthy. It is made of brick and has battlements and machicolations. It was probably built by Italian masters at the invitation of Bishop Guillaume de Challant (1406-1431), who himself came from the Aosta Valley. This type of architecture has well-known predecessors such as the fortress of Verona and no less famous successors such as the Moscow Kremlin. The Place St-François, located at the entrance to a pedestrian zone, is dominated by the church of the same name, the only remnant of a 13th century Franciscan monastery that has housed a Protestant community since the 16th century. The church has beautiful modern stained glass windows by Cingria, Haeton and Bieler.
