The Hoogen Steener are among the tombs located along the "Road of Megalithic Culture." For more information about this, or just to get some insight, visit strassedermegalithkultur.de. The tourist information office in Werlte also has an information flyer with a map of many of the stone tombs. Finds from this period can be seen in Oldenburg at the "Nature and Man" Museum on the dam (naturundmensch.de), which regularly hosts special exhibitions, or at the Emsland Archaeology Museum (archaeologie-emsland.de) in Meppen.

The Devil's Stones really blew my mind. I'm always amazed when I see these incredibly interesting megalithic tombs and always wonder how people managed to do them in the past without cranes and hydraulics.

Unfortunately the savages were too wild and had to leave

This is one of the better/larger megalithic tombs in the region. As far as I can see, it is well looked after, there is now a small seating area with a roof for 6 people, so you can take a break there.

The "Devil's Stones of Bischofsbrück". There are several sites of the so-called megalithic culture in this area. When there is thunder and drizzle, we are happy about the shelter with a table and benches that is also available here.

The tower can be reached via the main path. The path is secured with a barrier at the front. A narrow path leads past the barrier on the right. I think it was deliberately chosen to be so narrow. After that you have to drive about 500 m along a dirt road. When you get there and take a break, take the rubbish with you. Those who want to "litter or smear everything around" should do so within your own four walls - if you have any. Intelligence comes from understanding ... The observation tower in the Leegmoor nature reserve provides impressive insights into the bird life of the European protected area. In addition, there are areas with a fairly well-developed meadow bird population as well as open water areas with resting birds all year round and the extensive moor, pasture and meadow landscape. Thanks to the relatively good access, this natural experience can be admired all year round. https://surwold.de/aussichtsturm-im-leegmoor/

Neuvrees bison monument The life-size bison statue is located in a beautifully landscaped and maintained rest area with benches and an information board on the edge of the Eleonora Forest. The place is intended to particularly invite cyclists to take a break. At the end of 2005, three cows and one bull were released into the Eleonorenwald wildlife enclosure. The project failed due to a dispute about the danger of the bison between the municipality of Vrees and the Emsland district on the one hand and the landowner Arenberg-Meppen GmbH, as the municipality wanted to make the site freely accessible to the public. The forest owner and the Ministry of the Environment as a cooperation partner, however, considered the bison to be too dangerous to make the enclosure accessible to pedestrians and mutually terminated the mutual usage agreement. The herd, which had now grown to eight bison, had to be relocated to the Döberitzer Heide in Brandenburg; the bull bison had to be sent to Belgium because of its dangerous nature. In the Friesoyth district of Neuvrees on Feldstrasse, a bison monument (represented by a plastic bison) erected in 2008 commemorates the project that was later completed (excerpt from Wikipedia).
