The extensive pond landscape in Riddagshausen is the result of the work of the Cistercian monks, who drained the then very swampy area and created fish ponds. Of the original 28 ponds, 11 still exist today, of which the Mittelteich and Kreuzteich (between which the excellent path marked here runs) are among the largest. The ponds are home to a rich variety of flora and fauna. A small but nice weekly market takes place on Saturday in the old town market. Many regional products are offered there. It's worth a visit.

The old town market with the old town hall and market fountain was the center of Braunschweig's old town.

The square, laid out in the 12th century, was the main market and fairground, annual fair and place of execution, venue for equestrian games, homages and processions.

It is also called the Old Town Market Fountain. The fountain is the focal point of the market square and was cast in lead in 1408.
