former military training area with many paved roads and meadow paths

Very nice little castle 🏰 in the park and with a view of the lake and the Oker.

In the south of Braunschweig, on Wolfenbütteler Strasse, lies a historical gem: the Richmond palace complex, the former refuge of Duchess Augusta (1737/1780-1813). The attractive group of buildings consisting of a pleasure palace and outbuildings is surrounded by an English landscaped park, which has been largely restored in recent years. The view stretches far across ponds, winding paths and along clumps of trees to a small temple in the distance. A visit is particularly worthwhile in May when the large rhododendrons are in bloom. The restored palace now serves representative purposes. It is rented to non-profit and private organizers and also used by the registry office of the city of Braunschweig for weddings. Beautiful avenue with old trees, but also with replanting. There is a bench and a small rest area right on the avenue.

The paths should be used with care when it is wet. Slipping!!! Not all paths are paved.

The nature reserve is located southeast of Braunschweig. It places open land areas of the former training area near Cremlingen on a hilly relief as well as adjacent forest areas in the west and south with natural and structured oak and mixed beech forests under protection. The open land areas are characterized as poor, lowland hay meadows and pipe grass meadows. Embedded in it are small sandy lawns and open ground areas as well as small wooded areas. In some places water-bearing still waters can only be found temporarily. Reitlingsgraben and Cremlinger Bach and some of them flowing streams run through the nature reserve. Reeds and sedges are formed in damp places. In the north of the nature reserve there is a brine spring in a wet meadow rich in tall forebears. A 127 hectare part of the nature reserve has been part of the national natural heritage since the end of 2017.
