Between Lübben and the scattered settlement of Hartmannsdorf, halfway between the urban hustle and bustle of the Spreewald, it simply stands there – the old English oak. Overgrown, weathered, marked by life like an ancient forester who has seen it all. A gnarled giant, not quite alive anymore, but not walking either – a monument to time in the middle of the biosphere reserve. The short detour is worthwhile, whether by bike or on foot. On the partially shaded forest floor, the path leads directly to the oak tree, which is impossible to miss. Its broken branches reach toward the sky like warning fingers, its hollowed-out trunk is home to life of a different kind – insects, fungi, mosses, perhaps even a Spreewald goblin or two. The atmosphere here is unique. Quiet. Enchanted. Even on sunny days, the place seems almost sacred. If you like, take a break, eat a piece of apple, or briefly reflect on aging. Then we continue, perhaps towards the castle island of Lübben or out into the wide fields near Steinkirchen.

From the observation tower at Borcheltsbusch you have a wonderful view over meadows and fields. We were able to observe numerous birds. A crane and a great egret were staring through the reeds, grey geese and lapwings were in the meadow. It was accompanied by the singing of nightingales and yellowhammers.
