In 1942 and 1943 there were a number of forest fires in the region, although it was assumed that the largest fire (1943) was deliberately set in order to build the Kurmark SS military training area on the “cleared” area. The SS military training area was built around the village of Jamlitz near the small town of Lieberose. The Red Army took over the military training area and began to expand it in 1954. Until 1992, the area was used as a GSSD firing range and primarily for Warsaw Pact maneuver exercises. After the withdrawal of the armed forces, the Bundeswehr decided against further use of the site in 1994 and the areas of the Lieberose military training area were transferred to the state of Brandenburg. The Reicherskreuzer Heide is part of the 2,840 hectare Reicherskreuzer Heide and Schwansee nature reserve. This has been part of the Schlaubetal Nature Park since 1995.

Sand and heathland to the right and left, with a very nice cycle path in between.

With an area of 25,550 hectares, the Lieberoser Heide natural world is a huge, almost undivided area by German standards, and its undisturbed state and diversity of species is unique in Germany.

With almost 30 hectares in size and numerous rare animal and plant species, the Butzener Bagen is one of the 100 most valuable moors in Brandenburg. It gets its water from the immediate vicinity and from the mountain lake on the other side. The mountain lake used to be a stream, and the wall you are standing on here was artificially built in the first half of the 20th century to dam up the lake. The ditch that the bridge crosses drained the area for many years. During this time, residents were allowed to use parts of the Bagen as grassland. With drainage, however, the bog lost many of its important functions. It was not until 2006 that the Garben at the Bagen outflow was closed. Since then, the moor has recovered and can grow again. The trees that appear from time to time do not always withstand the increased water, but often die off. As a result, they in turn provide habitat for many animal species that specialize in deadwood. In 2012, middle and lesser woodpeckers were found as breeding birds in the Bagen for the first time.

The Rähdensee has an area of 12.2 hectares and a visual depth of about one meter. It is a popular bathing water and, thanks to the nutrient-poor, clear water, there are only a few reed beds at the edge of the bank. Individual pairs of great crested grebes and mallards breed here. The goldeneye breeds in the black woodpecker caves in the area, since the pine and sessile oak forest comes close to the shore. On the steep slopes to the Rähdensee, especially on the east bank, the hills rise to about 100-110 m above sea level. NHN, there are common beech, stocks of clubmoss and sprouting clubmoss as well as round-leaved wintergreen. The small chain of lakes is protected as a fauna-flora habitat on an area of 219.18 ha. Otters and greater Moosjungfer also find their habitat here in the Schlaubetal Nature Park.
