Very beautiful idyllic lake

Three interesting stone figures stand here in the middle of the forest. There is a bank not far away. The forest here is very natural.

Small idyll. A bench or other seating would be cool. A board on a hut provides information about the local tradition of carp ponds. The 10km Frankenwaldsteigla Green Belt passes here.

If you walk past the upper castle in Mitwitz and continue to the so-called bridle path in the direction of Häusles, you will come to a wide, level square halfway up the hill, which has been called "Staanerna Männla" since time immemorial. Many years ago, this place was used by the Mitwitzer Lordship, the lords of Würtzburg, for social gatherings. Here in this shady spot surrounded by deciduous trees, the noble ladies and gentlemen have gathered to celebrate after a successful hunt. But what does all this have to do with stone men? If we're honest, we don't really know. The square was probably framed by balustrades on which stone figures stood. But it is also possible that this place got its name in a completely different way. For example, there are the following considerations: a) In the vicinity of the square there are still boundary stones today. On a few of them is the "Würtzburger Männla" carved in stone, the coat of arms of the Barons of Würtzburg. b) There may also be a connection to the former quarry that is nearby. c) Stones once deposited on the square had a human-like shape. Perhaps one day we will learn the whole truth about the secret of the "Staanerna Männla".

If you leave Mitwitz in the direction of Coburg, you will meet a lion about 200 meters after leaving the town on the top left of the mountain. But don't worry, it's not a real one. The lion doesn't bite. It is carved out of sandstone and has been enthroned on Mitwitzer Berg for many years. If we want to know why there is a stone lion up there, we have to go back about 100 years. The year is 1894. At that time, Reichsrat Ludwig Freiherr von Würtzburg was an important and wealthy man in Mitwitz. For example, the Mitwitz moated castle and the upper castle belonged to him and his family. But wealth alone does not bring happiness. His beloved mother, Baroness Annie von Würtzburg, had just died. She had last lived in Bamberg with her husband Philipp Hartmann Veit von Würtzburg. But now she was to be buried in the home of her husband and son in the Mitwitz cemetery. The funeral car arrived in Mitwitz in a horse-drawn carriage. Many fellow jokers were on their way to receive the hearse. Of course, there was Ludwig Freiherr von Würtzburg, the pastor, the teacher with his school children, the mayor and many adults. The deceased was received at exactly the point where the lion was later to be pulled up the mountain and finally accompanied by the mourners to the cemetery. She is buried there next to her husband, who died three years later. On her tombstone we still find a special coat of arms with a lion. Baroness Annie von Würtzburg was English and her maiden name was Lyons (lyon = lion). When Ludwig von Würtzburg was already old, he often remembered his loving and beautiful mother. He wanted to erect a monument to her. So he commissioned a master mason from Mitwitz to carve a lion out of stone. 1907: The time has finally come. Now the stone lion is pulled up the mountain with great effort by six strong men with ropes and placed where it can still be found today.
