9月 10, 2025, Restored Selz River Near Schafhausen
The renaturalized Selz River near Schafhausen is a prime example of successful nature conservation in Rheinhessen. This section of the Selz River south of Alzey-Schafhausen has undergone extensive ecological enhancement in recent years – and you'll notice this immediately when you walk along it.

8月 29, 2025, Andesite Outcrops in Aulheimer Tälchen
The Aulheim Valley lies within the Flonheim district in Rheinhessen. Geologically, Rheinhessen largely corresponds to the Mainz Basin, the northeastern edge of the Upper Rhine Graben. When the Upper Rhine Graben collapsed millions of years ago during the folding of the Alps, a connection was created via the Rhone Valley to a subtropical sea in the south and via the Hessian Depression to what is now the North Sea. This led to two flooding phases in the Oligocene and Miocene. The Vorholz Peninsula was only briefly flooded. The floor of the Mainz Basin consists of rock formations from the Rotliegend or Permian periods (296–251 million years ago). There was volcanic activity here from fissure volcanoes that covered the surface with layers of lava. In the Aulheim Valley, the lava was fast-flowing, low-silica lava, which cooled quickly and solidified into porous sediment with numerous gas inclusions. This made andesite unsuitable as a building material. Water and minerals penetrated the inclusions, and after the water evaporated, agates and geodes slowly formed. On the path through the Aulheim Valley from the Geistermühle to the Aulheimer Mühle, you can still see the retaining walls of the slope on the side facing Flonheim. Boundary stones can still be found here, marking the old district boundary.

There was once a sea here 30 million years ago. The Rheinhessen coastal path provides insights into different coastal shapes in various rock outcrops.

The Hauck'sche quarry is one of 16 sandstone quarries in the Flonheim area. The emergence of the Flonheim sandstone goes back to the time of the "Rotliegend" approx. 290 million years ago. The light yellow color, partly interspersed with dark brown and black iron rinds (limonite), gives the Flonheim sandstone its unique appearance. The Flonheim sandstone was already quarried by the Romans and probably used for country houses, temples and tombstones. Excavations at the former Roman fort in Alzey bear witness to this. Over the centuries, the sandstone was used for numerous buildings in Flonheim, e.g. for the former Augustinian monastery, the defensive wall and the historic town hall. However, the Flonheimer sandstone was not only a popular building material in Flonheim, but throughout the entire region. The stonemason trade reached its peak in the 17th and 18th centuries. You can still admire this today in the magnificent baroque inns and town houses with their unique door portals. The evangelical market church and the bear pharmacy bear witness to a second boom in the sandstone industry around the turn of the century (1900). Flonheim sandstone was also used in the construction of Cologne Cathedral in the 19th century.

5月 14, 2023, Andesite Outcrops in Aulheimer Tälchen
Andesite - The volcanic rock exposed here in numerous places has the name andesite, known after the Andes in South America, where it was first described. Andesite is a fine-grained rock that belongs to the class of igneous volcanic rocks and is gray to black in the Aulheim part. From a distance you can see the flow structures of the formerly liquid rock. If you want to delve deeper into the matter, you will find it here: https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC5WG3D_hot-rocks-aulheimer-andesite-rhyolite

The Rheinhessen coastal path consists of 3 circular hiking trails and the Beach Path of the Senses near Eckelsheim. The "Flonheim circular route" described here leads along the former north-west coast of the Vorholz peninsula, along the andesite quarries of the Aulheim valley and past the Flonheim trullo to the numerous quarries where Flonheim sandstone was mined for centuries. It is a continuously signposted circular hiking trail.

The renaturation is really bearing fruit here! We were surprised that the water level in the area is unusually high. Now we have found the cause in the form of a 1.20 m high beaver dam. The beaver has thus created an ideal habitat for itself.

At this point / I would like to quickly / say something about the source: To quote the incomparable humorist Heinz Erhardt (1909 - 1979), who was known to a wide audience for his pun and “Noch'n Gedicht”, with a short quatrain: "There is certainly a lot of beautiful about it, on the element, the wet. Because you can drink the water. But you can - also leave it alone. " (H.Erhardt)

Below the Alzeyer core area, the Selz passes the Schafhausen district, after which the Weidas flows into. A lot has happened in terms of renaturation along the 61 km long river, and you come across such sections and corresponding information boards again and again.
