As a racing cyclist, this ascent or the route via Hofstetten and the Biereck are clearly more attractive alternatives to the heavily trafficked federal road B294 via the Heidburg, in order to get as directly as possible from the central Kinzig valley into the Elz valley and thus drive towards Freiburg. If you come from the upper Kinzig valley, the distance to be covered on this route is the same as over the Heidburg. Not only do you get fewer cars and motorbikes for the additional vertical meters, the route is also much more attractive in terms of landscape.

The Fohrenbühl can be approached from 4 sides and thus optimally combined with a racing bike tour. As an ascent from the valley, I recommend the Kirnbach, where the entrance is at Wolfach. Both the Schramberg side and the Hornberg side are suitable as a descent, both of which lead back to Wolfach.

The ascent is quite crisp in sections - but how strenuous it must be depends entirely on the available gear ratio and the speed at hand. If you are only equipped with 42/21, of course, you should bring well-toned calves with you so that the fun does not suffer.
