The "Thyraburg" is located at a strategic corner of the Danevirke. The rectangular plateau lies at the end of the main wall and borders the lowland of Lake Dannevirke. It is now silted up. Can you see the former lakeshore in the landscape? The builders of the Danevirke cleverly incorporated the lake as a natural barrier. On the other bank, the northern and connecting walls meet. Beautiful nature reserve. Today I'm going on a tour towards the west coast and not, as usual, to Angeln or Schwansen. A very nice round trip from/to Hollingstedt. I included Friedrichsstadt as an intermediate destination. The landscape is very varied. Lots of rivers and wetlands. Then a few meters of elevation on the last 20 kilometers.

The castle complex The "Thyraburg" is located at a strategic corner of the Danevirke. The rectangular plateau is at the end of the main wall and adjoins the lowland of the Dannevirke Lake. It is now silted up. Can you see the former lake shore in the landscape? The builders of the Danevirke cleverly incorporated the lake as a natural obstacle. On the other bank, the northern and connecting walls meet. The main wall was dated to 737 AD near this point, so it existed before the Viking Age. The age of the castle is unknown, however. It was later named after Queen Thyra Danebod. Thyra was the mother of Harald Bluetooth and wife of Gorm, the Danish kings of Jelling. There may have been some kind of fortification on the Thyraburg. A moat and a flat outer wall secured the complex on the three land sides. However, no Viking Age finds were found. What significance the Thyraburg had for the Danewerk remains a mystery. Bergenhusen (Danish Berringhuse) is a municipality in the district of Schleswig-Flensburg in Schleswig-Holstein. The community is known nationwide as a stork village, as one of the largest white stork colonies in Europe is located here. Bergenhusen lies on the Geestrücken Stapelholm in the Eider-Treene-Sorge lowlands. Blumental, Brunsholm, Lüttensee and Osterfeld are in the municipal area. The eastern border of the municipal area forms the Alte Sorge, in the west the Treene flows and forms the transition to the district of North Friesland. Bergenhusen was first mentioned in 1304 as Beveringhusen (from Bewer, i.e. beaver), but archaeological finds show that Bergenhusen was also inhabited 6000 years ago, at least since the Neolithic period. This is evidenced by burial mounds and prehistoric fields. From December 1, 1905 to 1943, Bergenhusen had a railway connection through the Schleswig State Railway Station – Friedrichstadt District Railway Station of the Schleswig District Railway. Passenger traffic was discontinued on February 1, 1934, and freight traffic ended in July 1943 at the latest, as the track was dismantled on August 2, 1943. "From March to September, guests of Bergenhusen can enjoy a very special kind of nature play. Up to 19 pairs of storks raise their young here year after year. Countless nature lovers enjoy the clattering of the storks every spring when they occupy their nests and In the summer you can watch them feeding the young birds and at the end of the breeding season, the young storks' first attempts to fly are impressive." Bergenhusen was first mentioned in 1304 as Beveringhusen (Biberhausen). Today there are no beavers here, but one of the largest colonies of storks in Europe. Up to 22 pairs breed in the "Village of Storks". Just rest on one of the many benches and watch the hustle and bustle of the stork parents! I come from a stork area, but the impressions from Bergenhusen topped everything I had ever known before! A trip here is definitely worth it!

A beautiful circular path leads through the moor here. On many information boards you will learn all sorts of interesting facts about the different plant species and the development of the moor from its formation to the present day. The old, rotten path has now been replaced by a new wooden walkway, so that it is now safe to walk again. Only dogs don't have as much fun here because of the rabbit wire on the wooden planks.
