Large Oak Tree near Ottersdorf Location: Directly at the edge of the forest near a large field, near the Ottersdorf farmstead and chapel. Also called a 1,000-year-old oak. The cylindrical trunk is completely free of branches up to a height of about 5 m. The trunk has no hollow, but does show lightning damage extending from the crown to the ground. The crown is formed by several upright branches and reaches high. There are numerous dead branches in the crown. After the Bavaria beech in Pondorf, which suddenly broke apart, this oak tree is now perhaps the most remarkable tree in the region. Tree species: English oak Age: 600 years and older Circumference: 8.22 m – Date measured: October 2, 2023 Height: 24.0 m Condition: Vital, lightning damage Source: https://www.baumkunde.de/baumregister/1397-grosse_eiche_bei_ottersdorf/

Kreutberg near Altmannstein The Kreutberg is one of the most beautiful landscape conservation areas in the Schambach Valley. The approximately 30-hectare protected area is diversely structured. Semi-arid grasslands and juniper heaths cover vast areas, interspersed with rocky outcrops and genuine dry grassland. The circular hiking trail, which offers magnificent views of the landscape, leads past magnificent rock formations, particularly through the so-called Rock Garden with the "Kreutberg Lion," a rock with a lion-like shape. We encounter numerous rare and protected plants typical of the dry grasslands of the Altmühl Valley and its tributaries. On a walk in early spring (March/April), we are greeted by the violet glow of pasque flowers, also called "daffodils" due to their flowering time and their use in folk customs. At the same time, in semi-arid and dry grasslands, yellow-flowering spring cinquefoil can be found. Its name refers to its palmate leaves, and its stems are more hairy in drier locations. Directly on the rocks at this time of year, the otherwise very rare mountain cinquefoil can also be observed, with its tiny yellow flowers forming a dense cluster. Together with the inconspicuous white-flowering spring celandine and the early speedwell, which only opens its sky-blue blossoms at midday, as well as the peculiarly blue-green frosted, mixed-leaved pursewort, the mountain cinquefoil forms a plant community that already scatters its fruits by the end of May. During the hot summer days, these plants are no longer visible; they survive as seeds that only germinate in late autumn. Source: www.altmannstein.de
