Cappella di San Gottardo - Chapel at the Gotthard Hospice The St. Gotthard Pass was first used as a pass starting in the 13th century, and the hospice, built at the behest of Milanese Archbishop Galdino (1171), also dates from this period. A chapel was built alongside the hospice on the site of a small church dating back to the 9th/10th century. It was rebuilt towards the end of the 18th century at the instigation of the Capuchins, who managed the hospice until 1799. Since the 13th century, the Gotthard Hospice has been the epitome of a stopover on a journey, on a path from there to there, to there from there. The St. Gotthard as a meeting place, as a hostel, as a center - a place that separates worlds, but above all also brings worlds together. A tourist camp is available for inexpensive overnight accommodation. In this hostel you can meet people from all over the world and share interesting experiences about the Swiss Alps with them. The hostel has 3 rooms for 12 people and one double room. Thanks to its location right next to Albergo San Gottardo, you can also benefit from the restaurant.

The originally heterogeneous structure of the old hospice has recently risen defiantly and archaically, expanded by one floor, under a new lead roof. Numerous dormer windows refer to the new hotel rooms. The architects preserved the facades and the chapel attached to the north in their original form, removing only a more recent addition, while almost completely renovating the internal structure of the hospice. Solid interior walls and ceilings are inserted in the two lower floors. Above this, a wooden stand construction on the inside of the old quarry stone facade ensures sufficient thermal insulation and serves as a support for the new wooden beam ceilings and the roof construction.

The ancient Ospizio del San Gottardo is on the European Heritage List. The label recognizes the importance of a monument to the history and culture of Europe. The old Gotthard Hospice (2100 m above sea level) has been a symbol of the connection between the cultures of northern and southern Europe for centuries. It probably dates back to the 13th century and is the most historic building on the Gotthard. Famous personalities have already been here: Goethe, for example, Mendelssohn and Wagner.

Beautifully situated mountain hut above Lago Sfundau

The Cristallina Hut belongs to the Swiss Alpine Club – Section Ticino – Lugano. It is newly built, in the immediate vicinity of Passo Cristallina, at 2575 m, and is located on a saddle that naturally separates Valle Maggia (Valle Bavona) and Valle Bedretto. From the south-facing panorama terrace you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Basodino Glacier and the nearby mountain peaks. The new hut replaces the old structure of 1939. Standing at 2349 m, it was completely destroyed in 1999 by avalanches that thundered down from Pizzo Gararesc to the Bassa di Folcra. For safety reasons, the pass was chosen as the location for the new building. It was built during 8 months, summer 2001 and 2002 and in December 2002 the hut was accessible again. The official inauguration took place in July 2003.
