In the Middle Ages, the former castle was the regional administrative center of the Bishopric of Würzburg and also a border fortress to the areas of the Bishopric of Fulda. For a long time it was assumed that the castle was no longer used after it was destroyed in the 13th century. Archaeological investigations have meanwhile revealed construction phases that can be dated to the 16th century. The subsequent decay caused the complex to fall into oblivion. It was not until 1897 that forest master Fuchs discovered the remains of the wall while laying out a wood removal path and had them uncovered.

The former Stangenroth basalt quarry (closed and dismantled in 2013) is an impressive geotope today!

From Wikipedia: In 1767, the Cascade Valley was created in a valley between Hausen and the Bad Kissinger Klaushof Wildlife Park along the course of the Ilgenbach. The water of the Ilgenbach comes from the source of the village well in the nearby Bremersdorf desert. Prince-Bishop Adam Friedrich von Seinsheim, who would have liked to have such a facility in his residence in Würzburg, had artificial cascades built along the Ilgenbach flowing through the valley and sculptures erected, possibly by the Bad Bockleter court sculptor Ferdinand Tietz, the creator of the figures in the Bad Bocklet spa park.

“Each of these crosses can tell its own story and what prompted people to erect “their” cross at this point. (...) These wayside crosses were erected as visible signs and attract the attention of many people. The cross is a symbol of life. It stands as a sign of our Christian hope and wants to direct our gaze to Jesus Christ, who has overcome death (...). The cross is part of our life as it was in the life of Jesus. So I wish that many people … visit the crosses, whether as places of stillness and breathing space before God, whether as places for community gatherings, prayer and praise to God.” (Text source: Dean Rainald M. Ollig in: "Crossroads... small sacred monuments as a sign of popular piety")
