The Hirschteich is considered to be one of the three Altmühl sources. However, since this source dries up again and again in dry periods, it is considered unlikely. Since 1904, the Hornauer Weiher has been officially designated as the Altmühl source.

Seen from above, this is the 2nd of the 3 Altmühl springs, all of which claim to be the REAL source. However, there is an official stipulation that the actual source or origin of the Altmühl is the Hornauer Weiher. This should end the eternal quarrel....but of course it didn't work😊 But that doesn't matter to us cyclists/hikers, we can still see everything. All 3 places are quite beautiful and worth seeing, so go there/hike!
