This is the reconstruction of the circular moat that must have stood here many millennia ago. On information boards you will find everything you need to know about the complex as well as information about the skeleton that was unearthed in the center of the complex.

In the area of Ippesheim, which is famous for its wine, one of the oldest circular moats in Europe was built around 7,000 years ago. It was probably a “place of worship” where - similar to Stonehenge - the natural spectacles of the stars could be observed, accompanied by festivals and certain rituals. The site was discovered in 1989 through aerial archeology photographs and excavation work took place here from 1998 to 2004. The remains of a female skeleton were discovered in the center of the complex, which was buried “upside down” in a pit. In 2021, a model of the “circular ditch system” on a scale of 1:4 and the original visual axes was built not far from where the system was originally located. You can find out a lot of interesting things about the “circular ditch system” on the information boards there. If you would like to know more about this, you will find it on the website www.weinbauverein-ippesheim.de/willkommen/de/index.htm.

One of the oldest circular moats in Europe was built around 7,000 years ago in the corridor of Ippesheim. At this time, almost 2,000 years before Stonehenge, complex systems were built for observing them, which were connected with festivals and rituals, fascinated by the natural spectacles of the stars.
