The Ems is a major river in northwest Germany, with a length of about 371 kilometers. It rises in the Senne near Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock and flows into the North Sea near Emden. The river flows through the federal states of North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony and is divided into three sections: the Upper Ems, the Middle Ems and the Lower Ems. The Ems is historically important and was already known to ancient authors. The river name "Amisios potamos" originally comes from Ptolemy. In the past, the Ems served as a navigation route for the Romans trying to reach the Germanic tribes in the Teutoburg Forest. Today, the river plays an important role in the regional economy and environmental protection. It is part of numerous nature conservation and renaturation projects aimed at preserving and improving its ecological integrity. The Ems is also an important transport route for inland shipping and connects several canals such as the Dortmund-Ems Canal.
