Over 300 years of tradition and current programming: The Braunschweig State Theater, with its five departments of music theater, drama, dance theater, YOUNG! State Theater and State Orchestra, is committed to both the repertoire and current commissioned works and premieres. Depending on the department, the historical roots of the Braunschweig State Theater lie in various predecessor institutions. The orchestra can claim the most extensive history; it can refer to a 27-member ducal court orchestra that can be traced back to the end of the 16th century. Music theater, or more precisely opera, often enriched with ballet, remained the great art form in the theater business of the 17th and 18th centuries. Drama, on the other hand, remained the art of traveling theater troupes who came to the fairs in Braunschweig and set up their stages in inns until the 18th century. In 1829, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's "Faust I" was performed here for the first time, based on the original work and "unadulterated". Although it was greatly shortened, the Braunschweig audience had to endure a good five-hour evening of theater - and received the piece almost euphorically.
