As idyllic as Carinthia's largest lake appears to the viewer from the slight hill, allowing one to enjoy the scenery, its origins are linked to a legend – one with a fatal outcome for the people of that time. A wealthy town is said to have once stood on the site of today's lake, but its inhabitants probably enjoyed a rather dissolute life. According to the story, the Wörthersee Mandl appeared to the wildly revelers – one version of the story places the event on Christmas Eve – as a warning. But since they refused to convert, the Wörthersee Mandl opened a small barrel he had brought with him, from which endless, unstoppable masses of water flowed – creating today's Wörthersee and swallowing the then town.

Approx. 15 min. climb to the Wildenstein Waterfall. The highest free-falling waterfall in Europe. It's definitely worth it.

Impressive waterfall with a drop of 50 meters. The highest of its kind in Europe. From the car park, the path takes you up to the waterfall in serpentines and is sometimes quite steep, taking another 15 minutes. The path is closed to bicycles!

New square with town hall and delicious mulled wine

The rectangular shaped Neue Platz is the central city square of Klagenfurt, in the middle of which stands the Lindwurm as the city's landmark and heraldic animal. The square was created in the second half of the 16th century, when the estates had their new Renaissance city built south of the medieval one. They also commissioned the Lindwurm monument, which commemorates the beginnings of the city according to the founding legend: Ford of the “Klagen” = Klagenfurt. In 1593, the 124 hundredweight work made of chlorite slate is said to have been dragged from nearby Kreuzbergl to Neuer Platz by 300 young men dressed in white. In 1636 the sculpture was expanded into a lindworm fountain with a fountain trough, club-wielding Hercules and a Renaissance lattice. The well once supplied the city with drinking and fire-fighting water. For the 2008 European Football Championship, the square was redesigned according to the plans of the architect Boris Podrecca. Dark granite stone slabs form the elegant “carpet” for the lindworm fountain.
