The Zicklacke is important for various bird species where they have their nesting sites.

We were lucky, there were about 20 donkeys there in beautiful weather.

One of my absolute favorite places! This year we were able to see and hear countless white baroque donkeys, black cattle, geese... The vast landscape alone is worth a visit, a paradise for nature lovers! If you want to avoid the sandy stretch, you can take the path where the carriages also drive. It comes from Illmitz, paths near Schrändlsee.

Very nice there, deep sand, it would certainly look different when it rains.

The rare white donkeys can be seen on the edge of the preservation zone of Lake Neusiedl National Park. There is also a lookout tower (a gift from the Hungarian border guards) for a wide all-round view.

It pays off to explore the area around the lowest point in addition to photographing the sign: Apetlon itself. In summer temperatures and when it gets dark, you can often find the locals in so-called guest gardens, wine taverns and wine taverns. Initially taciturn and difficult to understand, a glass or two of the wine, which is valued far beyond the borders of the region, can loosen your tongue. But caution is advised: many a person was captivated by the excellent cuisine, the beguiling hospitality and the tempting wines - and did not get to work in time from the lowest point in Austria the next day.

The tedious (short) journey is worth it. At first there were no donkeys and I was disappointed. But then they came running and rolled in the sand. Unfortunately, I had to flee from the brakes, but wasn't fast enough.
