The "Phare des Mamelles" lies on the higher of the two twin basalt cones, Deux Mamelles, 153m above sea level, making it the highest point on the Senegalese coast. Built in 1864, the lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse in Dakar. Its luminosity, in addition to that of the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, is considered the strongest in Africa. The lighthouse is located in the district of Mamelles on one of the two basalt hills, which give the district its name.
