The Icefjord near Ilulissat is world-famous and was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2004. This makes the Icefjord a very special place, one you will never forget. The magnificent Sermeq Kujalleq glacier is a truly impressive glacier. It is the fastest glacier in the Northern Hemisphere, moving 40 meters a day. There were other glaciers that moved faster, such as Qeqertarsuaq, but this changed after a while. The Sermeq Kujalleq, however, keeps moving. The ice glacier is truly enormous: it is 6 kilometers wide and 45 kilometers long. That's equivalent to about 66,000 football fields. Furthermore, the glacier is known for shedding the same amount of ice into the water as Manhattan consumes in a year. In fact, the Sermeq Kujalleq produces a full 10 percent of all Greenland's icebergs! A boat trip to the mouth of the Icefjord is an extraordinary experience. Gigantic icebergs have settled here on the bottom of the fjord mouth. At this point, the water is not as deep as further out in the fjord because the icebergs have pushed together sandbanks. Thus, the ice lies on the bottom here and only moves further when it melts and no longer touches down, or a larger chunk of ice breaks off from the glacier and pushes more ice outward. Or high waves suddenly arise from broken ice, which then lift the ice and drive it further. A magnificent spectacle and an absolute highlight of a special kind.

One of Greenland's few black beaches. Since this part is of volcanic origin, there is the black lava beach here. Especially great when the icebergs strand here.

Beautiful view of the ice field. I was lucky enough to be here twice within a week. Then you can see that the entire ice sheet is moving in the direction of the open sea.
