The climb to Crown Range Pass near Queenstown is a highlight for any cyclist! 😊 Coming from the north, the ascent begins just before the town of Cardrona. The road winds gently through the landscape, past green meadows and small lakes. The higher you climb, the steeper the road becomes. The last 5 kilometers are a real test of endurance – the gradient is around 10-12%! 🚴‍♂️ But the view is worth it: The Remarkables mountain range rises majestically into the sky, and you can see all the way to Lake Whaika. The pass itself is at an altitude of 1,076 meters and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. From here, you can look down to Queenstown and Lake Whaika. There are also several rest areas and viewpoints where you can catch your breath and enjoy the scenery. The descent is pure fun! The road is winding and leads through breathtaking scenery. You can really let loose and enjoy the speed! 😄 Overall, the Crown Range is one of the most beautiful and challenging cycling routes in New Zealand. Hard ride, worth the effort, pretty steep at the start of the decent into Nelson, but quickly levels out to a brilliant decent.

It is probably an OK alternative to the Highway from Pelorious Bridge to Nelson. The Nelson Side is way steeper. No matter which direction you go and no matter how little lugage you take, you will probably need to push your bike in some parts up the hill and eventually even down the hill.

This scenic pass offers stunning views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. Named after the three distinctive coconut trees that once marked the spot. From here you will discover a spectacular, otherworldly backdrop.

The Maungatapu Saddle is the main route for power lines from Nelson to Marlborough. The gravel road is very rough and steep, especially on the western side. Open only to walkers, mountain bikers and motorcycles. Closed to all other motorized vehicles since 2010.

If you've made it this far (either from Hilo or Kailua Kona) head up Mauna Kea here. The road is paved up to the visitor center. There are also supply options there. Here at the junction you are at approx. 2010 m and climb up to the Visitor Center at approx. 2850 (warm change of clothing is required!). The route is about 10 kilometers long. After that it gets much steeper and gravelly until you reach the summit.

The ride up to the Access Rd from Hilo is a steady 6%, up to 2000 meters. It’s not hard just boring. The road is wide so can sometimes be disorienting as to if you’re going up or down. Trust me you’re going up. The hard shoulder is smooth, wide, away from the vehicles, with some stones etc but easy to dodge.

A must for touring cyclists on the South Island. The ascent is rewarded with a wonderful view.

Nice viewpoint. As it is easy to reach by car a good starting point for a hike we along the crater rim.

On the way up and down you have always a magnificent view of the Pass Summit, which is located at 920m.
