The Schöpfl, as the highest mountain in the Vienna Woods, offers an ideal combination of nature experience and impressive views. The climb to the Matraswarte is particularly worthwhile, from which a spectacular 360° panorama stretches - from Vienna across the Tullnerfeld to the Schneeberg and Ötscher. After the hike, the Schöpflhütte invites you to stop for a cozy break. The well-marked paths make the climb a pleasant experience, even for less experienced hikers. A detour to the Mitterschöpfl and the Leopold Figl Observatory rounds off the tour with beautiful natural impressions.

Great view over the pines to the Schneeberg and the surrounding mountains.

The climb is worth it thanks to the all-round panorama

The Matterhörndl is a small but impressive rock in the Vienna Woods that is perfect for a short rest. It is a little hidden away from the main path and easy to miss, but it is worth the visit. With a small opening through and the opportunity to climb around a bit, it is a mystical place for photographers, children and nature lovers. I visited this mountain as part of my Dwarf Mountain Tours series. My goal is to climb every mountain in the Vienna Woods. Certainly the highlight of the (unfortunately no longer maintained) Vienna Woods long-distance hiking trail 404. There is a hut and a viewing tower.

The hike to the Schöpfl offers a short ascent to the highest mountain in the Vienna Woods to the "Matraswarte" lookout tower. From here you can enjoy a 360° panorama that extends from the Tullner Feld, via Vienna and the Vienna Basin to the Schneeberg and Ötscher. It's only a few steps from the lookout tower to the Schöpfl shelter, where you can stop for a bite to eat. On the way back, it's worth making a detour in the direction of the core zone "Mitteröpfl" of the Vienna Woods biosphere reserve. Around the Leopold Figl Observatory there are beautiful natural impressions in the spruce and fir forest. Back in St. Corona, you can round off the program with a visit to the Meiselberghof adventure farm with its camels, llamas, alpacas, reindeer, emus, etc., or end the day in the St. Corona inn.

This round is a beautiful hike not far from the west of Vienna. The paths are very well marked and easy to walk on.

“Each of these crosses can tell its own story and what prompted people to erect “their” cross at this point. (...) These wayside crosses were erected as visible signs and attract the attention of many people. The cross is a symbol of life. It stands as a sign of our Christian hope and wants to direct our gaze to Jesus Christ, who has overcome death (...). The cross is part of our life as it was in the life of Jesus. So I wish that many people … visit the crosses, whether as places of stillness and breathing space before God, whether as places for community gatherings, prayer and praise to God.” (Text source: Dean Rainald M. Ollig in: "Crossroads... small sacred monuments as a sign of popular piety")
