Quiet, secluded and beautiful

In the west of the Baltic Sea island of Poel lies the coastal town of Timmendorf, where fishermen and farmers settled as early as the Middle Ages. The place was first mentioned in 1257 and is now divided into two districts. These are the district of Timmendorf, which extends a good one kilometer inland, and the district of Timmendorf Strand, which lies directly on the water. The cliffs stretch south of the port of Timmendorf Strand. From the seafront, the footpath leads down into a strip of coastal forest above the cliff. From the path, numerous accesses lead to the steep bank. So you can look far out at the Wismar Bay and the Baltic Sea and overlook the sometimes quite bizarre, steep slopes and the narrow beach at the foot of the cliff. South of the Baltic Sea island of Poel and north of the Hanseatic city of Wismar lies the 8.65 hectare island of Walfisch, almost in the middle of the Wismar Bay. It is about 500 m long and about 300 m wide, very flat and a habitat for many sea and shore birds, which find enough rest here to nest and breed undisturbed by people. Walfisch is quite inaccessible in the Baltic Sea, so that a wonderful bird sanctuary could develop here. Trespassing is also strictly prohibited in order to ensure that the island continues to be an outstanding paradise for the feathered animals, which find a rich saline flora as a valuable food source in the shallow and often flooded shore areas.
