Heidelberg Castle is one of the most famous castle ruins in the world. From here you have a wonderful view of the city with its beautiful buildings, the Old Bridge and the gently flowing Neckar. The castle has had an eventful history since construction began in the 13th century. The lords of the castle expanded the building over three centuries. The castle therefore contains architectural testimonies, above all of the Gothic and Renaissance periods, the heyday of the castle - for example the Ottheinrichsbau, one of the most beautiful Renaissance palaces in Germany. After its destruction in the Palatinate War of Succession, the castle was never completely rebuilt, gradually fell into disrepair and finally experienced its second heyday during the Romantic period.

The POWDER TOWER / BROKEN TOWER originally had a height of about 28 meters. In 1610 it was expanded to 42.50 meters. Today, as a ruin, it still towers 33 meters high. One of the admirers of this ruin was Johann Wolfgang Goethe, who drew this tower on September 23, 1779 from the bridge over the moat.
