The Schloss Schartenfels restaurant is not a historic building. It was built in 1881 by Gottfried Anner from Baden on the Lägernfels as a vineyard cottage with a tower. Just one year later, he was granted permission to open a summer restaurant. In 1894 it was expanded into a castle-like complex. At a cost of CHF 45,000.00, Anner's property increased to 3 hectares, consisting of forest and rock, the castle park and the wine-growing region. The local community has leased the restaurant to Denise and Gian Riederer with the stipulation that the business should not only be run for high-end needs, but also offer hikers the opportunity to eat in the cozy garden or in the restaurant.

Due to the small finds that were found, Lägern Castle - also known as Hohen- or Altlägern - must have been built in connection with the establishment of the town of Regensberg by Baron Lütold V from 1244 to 1246 as the seat of his servants, the Knights of Lägern. According to the finds, the castle must have been destroyed before 1300 - possibly in the so-called Regensberg feud of 1267 - whereupon the lords of Lägern became completely impoverished and died out. In the years 1902–1904, extensive excavations took place under the supervision of the Zurich antiquarian society, but could not be completed due to lack of funds. The surrounding walls describe a rectangle of around 67 m by 20 m. Some interior walls indicate residential and economic buildings. There are no remains of a tower. In 1982 the walls, some of which had been severely broken, were repaired by the municipality of Boppelsen and the canton of Zurich.
