The Biesbosch was originally polder land, but after a storm surge, the area transformed into an inland sea. Water from the Maas and Waal rivers transformed it into a freshwater delta. Sand and river silt formed sandbanks, which were particularly suitable for rushes. Hence the name 'Biesbosch'. When the Haringvliet inlet was later closed off, the large differences between high and low tides disappeared. Nature was given free rein, and the area became wilder. Today, sea eagles and ospreys breed here again. A truly special sight!

Beautiful area with many birds. Currently very wet and parts of the walking path are closed. Strolling along the Maas is fun, but now it is swampy.

What many people do not know is that the large grazers in the Netherlands are not owned by Staatsbosbeheer. Staatsbosbeheer uses the services of organizations that release and manage various types of large grazers in nature reserves, such as FREE Nature. The Rode Geus has been found in the Munnikenland since 2000. At first in a small group, but the herd has now grown to more than 60 cattle. The Koniks joined in 2007. The herd currently numbers more than 100 animals, making it the largest free-living horse herd in FREE Nature. You can walk anywhere in this area, so go wandering and get off the beaten track. Just keep a safe distance from the animals, because they are and remain wild.
