3,000 years ago, the ashes of the dead were buried after cremation at the Busjop Burial Field. The ashes were then placed in an urn or cloth, and the whole area was covered with a low mound of sods. Each individual received his or her own burial monument. By repeatedly creating a new mound near another, a vast burial or urn field was created. Over the course of five centuries, a "death landscape" of more than fifty burial mounds developed here. In 1951, the burial field was partially investigated, after which the urns and cremated remains ended up in the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden. Due to the growth of trees and brambles, the mounds disappeared from view for a long time and fell into oblivion. In 2010-2011, the Dutch Forestry Commission, in collaboration with the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands, cleared the forest, creating an open landscape. This ultimately led to the rediscovery and restoration of seventeen burial mounds. Source: https://www.visitnoordlimburg.nl/nl/grafveld-busjop

Small parking lot and starting point for various walks, depending on the direction you leave, you can walk straight into the Netherlands.

The tank gap has nothing to do with the war. This used to be a military training area, and two tanks were used as targets here.

As I previously wrote on https://www.komoot.com/nl-nl/highlight/3048391, the Smeetshof is both the name of the farm where the walks depart and the nature reserve through which the walks pass. The farm was renovated in 1913 and called Smeetshof by the then owners, contractor Smeets-Clerx from Eksel. The buildings have been the property of the Flemish Land Company since 1999, which makes them available as part of the 't Smeetshof nature development project, as you can read on the information board with the photos. It also states that the Brussels lawyer family Mahieu built the first home here in 1874 after they bought the land from the widow de l'Escaille-d'Erp de Holt after the costs of the large-scale reclamation of former municipal lands in the former swamp forest here. had risen high.
