📍 Introducing the Gilet Cove The Gilet Cove is a small, natural beach on the oceanfront, located on Boulevard de la Conche de Gilet / Boulevard de la Falaise, in the town of Vaux-sur-Mer, just before Royan. 🌿 It's a sheltered, rocky cove, appreciated for its tranquility and more intimate setting compared to the larger urban beaches nearby. 🏖️ At high tide, the sea can completely cover this small beach, making the space very limited; at low tide, you can enjoy a patch of sand and rocks for relaxing or swimming. 🧭 Features & Tips 📍 Type of place: small, unsupervised beach, nestled among the rocks with sand and cliffs. 🏖️ Tides: access is best at low tide — at high tide the beach can disappear underwater. 🐶 Animals: prohibited from April 1st to September 30th (subject to municipal regulations). 👣 Access: via stairs from the boulevard above, surrounded by villas with sea views. 🚫 Lifeguard services: no lifeguard station or marked services. 📍 Location La Conche de Gilet is often considered the last small beach in Vaux-sur-Mer before reaching Royan/Pontaillac when following the coastline from Saint-Palais-sur-Mer.

Originally 75 million years ago, natural holes dug into the sea. Later, they were conditioned by man to serve as homes. They are restored and can be visited.

These rock dwellings were created by the sea 65 million years ago and then carved out and repeatedly inhabited by humans.

If you are looking for a quiet and shady place to relax, the Conche de Gilet is a natural gap in the rocks which offers a narrow and peaceful beach. Please note, however, that the beach is only accessible at low tide, as the sea completely covers it at high tide.

Two caves right next to each other, Matata and Regulus. Definitely a nice view.

The forest of Suzac, with an area of 350 hectares, presents a Mediterranean flora composed mainly of maritime pine and holm oak. On the edge of the forest, you can see the beaches and the sea. There are also calcareous lawns that extend over the cliffs and are covered with pink garlic and maritime iris which bloom in June.

There is a museum, within the dozen caves, which you can visit to go back in time to the prehistoric man who potentially took refuge in these trogolodyte caves.

The Suzac forest is one of the forest massifs bordering the coast of the Côte de Beauté, on either side of the Royan conurbation. It extends for a large part on the site of the Pointe de Suzac, a cape marking the limit between the municipalities of Saint-Georges-de-Didonne and Meschers-sur-Gironde, while overflowing largely on the surrounding dune cord . Forming a set extending over an area of nearly 350 hectares, including 83 hectares directly belonging to the Coastal Conservatory and 11 hectares forming part of its perimeter of intervention, the forest was largely damaged during the period of strong tourist expansion in the 1960s. This period notably saw the acquisition of several plots by campsites, holiday villages or individuals who built second homes there. In order to avoid the disappearance of this natural space, the authorities decided to put a stop to this policy and the first plots of the estate were acquired by the coastal conservatory in 1982. For 25 years, the latter worked to develop the spaces protected, 120 plots being bought from 1982 to 2007. At the dawn of the year 2000, the creation of a nature center was decided by the general council: thus was born the “Park of the estuary”, intended to enhance the estuary ecosystem. Walking paths have been laid out in the forest and the Fort de Suzac, testimony to the fortification of the Atlantic coasts during the German occupation, has been partly rehabilitated. The Suzac forest has Mediterranean-type vegetation. Although the most common species are maritime pine and holm oak, the estate is also a favorite spot for arbutus, sage-leaf cistus, cytinets or downy oaks. Several protected species are present on the site, including the carnation of the dunes. Finally, on the edge of the forest, the limestone lawn that stretches over the cliff is marked by the flowering in June of pink garlic and maritime iris. Among the animal species listed on the site, blue tits, wood pigeons, or bats are predominant.

Grande Conche Beach (or Saint Georges de Didonne Beach) is set between two limestone cliffs: to the north, on the Royan side, by the Vallières cliff and to the south, towards Meschers, by the Suzac cliff. Long of more than 2 km, the beach of Saint-Georges is very arranged in its part close to the city center and more natural, wild towards the point of Suzac. On this immense expanse of fine sand, swimming is supervised in summer (several lifeguard stations). Many activities and services are offered: kindergarten, beach club, swimming school, beach volleyball, nautical base, rental of tents and parasols, restaurants. Outside the summer period, sand yachting sessions take place on the Grande Conche beach under the aegis of the St Georges de Didonne sailing club.

The Caillaud cliff is the white cliff that can be seen from Talmont looking south, beyond the bay. The walk on the path of the Caillaud cliff remarkably completes the visit to Talmont, but it is also a destination for a walk in its own right. To reach the cliff path from the car parks at the entrance to Talmont, take the car over the bridge that closes the port and follow the small road that runs along the bay towards the south. You arrive at the hamlet of Caillaud and just after the big bend, you have to take a small road on the right which leads out between two houses. After a few hundred meters on this small road, you can leave the car. The start of the path is indicated by a wooden panel and allows a superb panoramic view of the bay, the port, the village, the Sainte Radegonde church and the estuary... The landscape of the cliff is inseparable from that of the squares. On December 27 and 28, 1999, storm Martin ravaged the region and caused considerable damage to the squares of the Charente coast and the estuaries of the Gironde and the Seudre. It was estimated that more than 200 squares had been destroyed. From the year 2000, many squares were rebuilt according to very strict rules, materials, colors, surface... We wondered what was going to be done for those of Talmont. The decision was made to rebuild the squares. Continuing on the Caillaud cliff path, you quickly find yourself between the estuary and the vineyards. The first time, we are a little surprised to see vines so close to the cliff (photos from 1999 prove that there were no vines planted on the cliff at that time). It is said that spending a day in Talmont and its close environment is to approach a concentrate of the landscapes and riches of Saintonge, the estuary, the cliffs, the plaices, the vineyards, the Romanesque...

What's a conch? This word does not seem to be French, and it seems that it is only used in Charente Maritime while everywhere else we speak of cove, cove or beach. A conche is therefore a beach, whether it is of a respectable size like the Grande Conche and its 2.5 kilometers or narrow and enclosed between two rocky plateaus like the conche de Gilet. Gilet beach is the last conch of Vaux-sur-Mer before arriving at Pontaillac beach in Royan. To come to this small calm and quiet beach, access is via stairs. In order to take advantage of the expanse of sand, it is recommended to come at low tide because at high tide, the sea completely covers it. A few rocks on the side allow you to put your towel down. No surveillance, no infrastructure on this beach, only a few squares to enjoy it in complete privacy ...... outside the tourist period!!!!!

Located on two floors on the side of a cliff. The museum housed in around ten caves invites you to go back in time through a reconstruction of troglodyte habitat from prehistory to the present day. Prehistoric men probably found refuge from ferocious beasts in these caves. In addition, several living conditions were met there: sources of drinking water, fish that could be caught in the rich waters of the estuary... You will also discover the fossilized wealth of the Cretaceous seabed: rudists, ammonites, nautiluses, sea urchins, corals, oysters... In aquariums, you will be able to observe some species of fish frequenting the waters of the estuary, among others, the famous caviar producer: the Sturgeon... In one of the caves, you will discover the reconstruction of a typical Saintongeais habitat from the 19th century: bed, kitchen utensils, collection of old regional earthenware, traditional costumes, headdresses and dressers. The life of the poor people who occupied the caves improved considerably with the arrival of tourists indulging in the brand new fashion of “Sea Bathing”. Indeed, the constant temperature, the brightness, the breathtaking view of the estuary, as well as the micro climate of the south-facing terraces made it a place for walks. We then saw the appearance of refreshment bars, taverns and restaurants, the best known and most popular of which was that of the Grottes de Matata. A reconstruction of the troglodyte habitat and a unique viewpoint make the caves of real tourist and cultural interest.
