This region was the beginning of oil production in Europe. The oil-bearing layer extends as far as the southern Palatinate, where oil is still occasionally extracted today.

Very practical for observing a large number of animals.

Lake Reichshoffen is an essential natural space located about 2 km from the town center of Reichshoffen and near the village of Nehwiller, and serves as a refuge for a multitude of animal species. Located on the water, an ornithological observatory has been installed there by the Northern Vosges Regional Nature Park, which can be used by animal and plant lovers all year round, day and night: since 1982, 130 species have been recorded on the water or in the surrounding wetlands, of which about 40 are nesting species that breed there. When the weather is clear, the panorama is sure to be breathtaking.

From here you have a good view of the Black Forest, Strasbourg, Karlsruhe and of course the smaller towns in the area.

It is here, by carrying a pair of binoculars and a nice camera and simply your eyes, that you can observe many species of birds.

Some 8.07 m around the trunk; 0.6 m in height and more than 14 m in height, its age is estimated between 350 and 500 years. A pretty well is in front, dating from 1732.

This refuge is hidden between the foliage and the trees of the magnificent forest. It is discreet and little traffic.
