The “Roche Sermet” is a rock formation located on the Hartmannswillerkopf¹ battlefield. It is located at an altitude of approximately **910 meters**². Hartmannswillerkopf, also known as Vieil Armand, is a pyramidal rocky spur in the Vosges massif, overlooking the Alsace plain from its 957 meters¹. During the First World War, it was a strategic summit hotly contested by the French and German armies¹. Today, the Hartmannswillerkopf is a place of memory, bearing witness to the suffering of the soldiers who fought in the name of their country¹. The German remains encountered on the ground, sometimes quite spaced apart from each other, are witnesses to this historical period¹. The approach from Bitschwiller-lès-Thann has an elevation gain of 400 meters over 6.2 kilometers. A maximum gradient of 13%. But it is relatively uneven, so it is not that easy to ride.

"Torment yourself, you sow!" Udo Bölt's helper is said to have yelled at his team captain Jan Ullrich on this rather second-rate pass at the 1997 Tour de France. It can no longer be determined exactly whether this is exactly the case, but at least the name of the pass "Hundsruck" actually fits the saying quite well and the website quaeldich.de, which has already been mentioned in another comment, also fits this cycling myth quite well.

The Lac du Ballon owes its name to the summit at the foot of which it is located, the Grand Ballon, the highest point in the Vosges. Embedded in a glacial cirque, it offers a setting of all splendor, the reflections of the sun making its surface shimmer in an alternation of shadow and light created by the rich surrounding vegetation. Although natural, it is forbidden to bathe there because it is used to supply water to the valley.

The visit is worthwhile. The museum is very good and the tomb site is well maintained. The hike through the position system also starts from here. Good shoes required, no flip flops! Clear recommendation to start from here

The 957 meter high Hartmannswillerkopf (French Vieil Armand, originally German Hartmannsweiler Kopf) is a hilltop in the Southern Vosges in the Haut-Rhin department in Alsace, near the towns of Hartmannsweiler and Berrweiler. The Hartmannswillerkopf was fiercely contested between the Germans and the French during the First World War because of its exposed and strategically favorable location with a view of the Alsatian and Upper Rhine plains. The struggle for the summit began on December 31, 1914. The heaviest fighting took place on December 19-20. January, March 26, 25./26. April and 21./22. December 1915. During the four years of the war, the hilltop changed hands four times. From about mid-1916 both sides reduced their troops there; more intense fighting took place in more northern sectors of the front. From 1916 there were essentially only artillery duels. Both sides were content to hold their lines. 30,000 French and German soldiers died in the skirmishes at Hartmannswillerkopf; about twice as many were injured. They did not lead to a result for either side and today they stand for the futility of the war. The Hartmannswillerkopf has occasionally been called the "mountain of death". On August 3, 2014, the 100th anniversary of Germany's declaration of war on France (World War I), Federal President Joachim Gauck and French President François Hollande met at Hartmannswillerkopf. On November 10, 2017, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and President Emmanuel Macron inaugurated a joint Franco-German museum to commemorate the fighting. The Lac du Ballon (German Belchensee) is a reservoir in a side valley of the Florival in the Vosges, at the foot of the Grand Ballon. Its outflow flows into the Lauch after 3.9 km. The small cirque lake was enlarged as early as the 16th century by raising it on the moraine. In 1699 Vauban had the dam built, and the lake now supplied water for canals during the construction of the Neuf-Brisach Fortress. The remains of the dam were washed away by floods in 1740 and 1778. In 1869, manufacturers from the Lauchtal built a tunnel under the lake bed as a drain in order to increase the usable volume. By 1955 the bedrock had leaked. 1966 to 1968 the lake was sealed, the dam raised again, with a flood drain on the left bank. The outlet tunnel was filled, and a new bottom outlet with a service tower was built. 1999-2000 the dam and the lake shore were bricked up and the dam crest was concreted. The lake, together with the smaller Lauchsee, serves as a drinking water reservoir and flood retention basin for the Lauchtal and the town of Guebwiller. Source: Wikipedia

The Lac du Ballon (Belchensee) lies in a narrow, wooded glacial basin at an altitude of 990 metres. According to legend, he should have no reason, because everything that falls into the lake is washed up again down in the Rhine Valley near Issenheim. Hartmannsweilerkopf in Alsace Known only to those familiar with the area and a few walkers before 1914, the Hartmannswillerkopf gained notoriety in both France and Germany as a result of the terrible fighting in 1915. In the course of the attacks and counter-attacks, the summit of the Hartmannswillerkopf was alternately under German and French rule. More than 7,000 German and French soldiers lost their lives in the trenches on this hilltop. The area is like a single graveyard. The fighting on the mountain in the Vosges was extremely hard. The strategically important position of the 956 meter high hilltop was hotly contested between December 1914 and January 1916. There was never a victor in the battle - A place to explore the full absurdity of World War I. A national memorial was also erected at Hartmannswillerkopf to commemorate the fallen soldiers, one of the four French national memorials of the First World War. The intentionally original work of the architect Robert Danis and the sculptor Antoine Bourdelle was inaugurated in 1932 by the then French President Albert Lebrun. The monument consists of two elements: an altar of the Fatherland dominating the esplanade and the military cemetery with 1,256 graves of French soldiers and 6 ossuaries, and a beautiful crypt - like an underground cathedral - into which visitors can enter through an 80-meter-long honorary trench reached.

More than 100 years ago a war raged here and there was so much suffering that a memorial was built here, which should give many a leader something to think about today.
