Between the Maldegemveld and the West Flemish border lie several scattered woodlands, including the Torrebos (or Kapellebos), the Lange Swiss, and the Kallekesbos. Together, they form the Burkel nature reserve. Previously, the Kallekesbos was inaccessible. Now, Natuurpunt (Nature Point) is pleased to open it to nature-loving hikers. Management focuses on restoration, forest expansion, and accessibility. Volunteers keep the paths clear and remove intrusive non-native tree species. This creek connects to the Boerekreek to the west and to the Oudemanskreek to the east. It contains brackish water. The creek lies directly north of the Leopold Canal. Due to silting, the creek could no longer drain, which caused problems for agriculture. Therefore, around 2000, the drainage to the Leopold Canal on the east side was improved, the creek was also dredged, and the banks were reinstated to the nature reserve. (Wikipedia)

In the Oudemanskreek you will find the sculpture group by artist Chris Ferket on the water surface, 'When the fox preaches passion, farmer beware of your geese'. Meaning: if a deceiver starts saying pious things, you should be extra careful. The sculpture group is a playful reference to the epic of Reinaert the Fox. The artwork was placed following the competition 'A home for a sculpture', which was organised by Radio 2 and IMEWO. Information panels provide more information.

The famous Graaf-Jansdijk once cut through the landscape here, offering protection against storm surges. For years, the area served as arable land, until Natuurpunt converted it into grassland. A flower-rich hay meadow is now developing around the Vuil Poelke, alternating with a flower-rich reed land. You can see a gradual transition from moist to very wet zones. Small landscape elements receive a lot of attention here: around the Vuil Poelke, the natural value of the pollard willows increases year after year.
