I followed the entire route along the SP1, but there are several trails in the woods that branch off from the dirt road and then rejoin. The highest point is at the end of the Santadi area, then you descend again to the picnic area. I recommend following the SP1 for the uphill sections and using the trails to descend the mountains.

At the gates of Cagliari, the Conti Vecchi salt pans are an immense natural area and an industrial archaeology site. Salt, nicknamed "white gold", has been extracted here for decades and this place, owned by Conti Vecchi, is now enhanced by the Fondo Ambiente Italiano. To visit them, here is the dedicated page on the FAI website: https://fondoambiente.it/luoghi/saline-conti-vecchi/visita.

The WWF Monte Arcosu Nature Reserve is only open on Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. It offers nine different hiking trails of different lengths and levels of difficulty, some of which can be combined with one another. The hiking trails start here at the visitor center. The WWF acquired the area in 1985 to protect the flora and fauna and especially the Sardinian deer, which are threatened with extinction. With a size of 3,600 hectares it is the largest WWF oasis in Italy. The visitor can expect a wonderfully fragrant forest, in which it hums and buzzes, and magical views of the surrounding mountains. You hardly meet other hikers. A visit in the form of a full day trip is highly recommended. Please remember to take enough drinking water with you. Fortunately, you won't find a bar or a kiosk here.
