At the edge of the forest, about 500 meters north of the Eisenhammer charcoal kiln, lies a long, flat boulder. When Luther used the old trade route from Wittenberg to Leipzig, he often rested at this spot. It is said that he spoke here with Wittenberg students who accompanied him on his way to the Reichstag in Worms. The engraved letters "D.M.L. - A Mighty Fortress is God" (D.M.L. = Dr. Martin Luther) are barely legible. Even today, you can take a relaxing break at the Luther Stone, nestled in the beautiful surroundings of the Düben Heath, or embark on a discovery tour to the nearby beaver observation tower. The Luther Trail runs directly past the Luther Stone. The pilgrimage route connects over 610 km of places in Saxony-Anhalt that were of great importance to the reformer. The Luther Stone measures approximately two by one meter. It is made of biotite-containing granite. Its composition makes it a so-called bowl stone, meaning that the heavily weathered surface has irregularly distributed depressions. These have sometimes been interpreted as Bronze Age representations of the sky.[2] More clearly, although difficult to decipher, is an inscription carved into the stone: "A Mighty Fortress is God." It is said to have been installed in 1817 on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the Reformation, as was the design of the area surrounding the stone.
