A beautiful, easy hike in the Jura Mountains with lovely views.

The Taubenloch Gorge, stretching for almost 3 km, is a romantic gorge with steep rock faces, bridges, tunnels, and easily accessible paths. The Schüss River flows through the gorge. It originates in the St. Immertal valley and empties into Lake Biel.

The Bieler Taubenloch, which stretches for almost 3 km, is one of the most popular destinations in the region. The romantic surroundings and the pleasant freshness make crossing the footbridges and strolling past caves and overhanging rocks a pleasure.

Very beautiful gorge, easy to walk, with rest area, bridges, cave, rushing water, manageable gradient.

Imposing grotto and at the same time a place of pilgrimage. Here you should switch from the hiking trail near the bridge to the road and pause for a moment and enjoy the gentle coolness and refresh yourself with the water from the Karlsquelle (which is said to have healing powers). A small karst spring arises inside the cave. The water flows as a trickle from a stalagmite into a shallow basin. There is a crucifix under the entrance arch of the grotto, dedicated to Saint Columba of Sens, a 3rd century martyr. The place has been the destination of a pilgrimage on August 15th since the 13th century. The spring water is said to have miraculous healing powers. The observation tower is located in the Häftli nature reserve on the Alte Aare in the municipality of Büren an der Aare in the canton of Bern. The tower, made of wood, is 10.5 meters high. 36 steps lead to the viewing platform at a height of 7.5 meters. The platform offers a view of the birdlife of the Old Aare. So far, well over 200 species of birds have been recorded in the Häftli, almost 80 of which are breeding birds. A small breeding colony of night herons from 1967 to 1970 was unique in Switzerland. Since then, it has only appeared as a migrant and rare summer guest. Important breeding birds include little grebes and great crested grebes, black kites, water rails, kingfishers, lesser spotted woodpeckers, nightingales and orioles. The Häftli is an important wintering site for waterfowl, including several hundred teals, gadwalls and wigeons. Various species of herons, birds of prey, limousines and numerous songbirds can be observed as they pass through. The Häftli is also an important retreat for amphibians. So far, grass frogs, water frogs, tree frogs, common toads, natterjack toads, great crested newts, pond newts, mountain newts and fire salamanders have been identified.
