8月 7, 2022, Wreck of the Paddle Steamer Oden

The paddle steamer "Oden" ran aground and was shipwrecked on August 9th 1836 The Royal Swedish paddle steamer "Oden" ran aground and sank off Thyborøn in 1836. The ship brought the Royal Swedish Minister of Justice from Sweden to London. On the way home it had loaded valuable general cargo. Several barons and other nobles were on board as passengers, when it stranded. It was possible to save the people safely, but the ship became a wreck. With a bit of luck, part of the cargo could be salvaged, but bad luck and bad weather prevailed. A large, valuable copper cauldron rolled off the salvage boat en route to land and was not found again. Today, west of breakwater 59, at a depth of 20 m of water, divers can see the remains of the ship - namely a square steel steam boiler and a heavy wooden ship's side with large bolts and nuts. With the first steamships, which were still made of wood, it was feared that that the vibrations of the machine could loosen the bolts and planks. That didn't happen, as far as we know today. But with nuts on all bolts, you at least had the ability to retighten the bolts. This wreck clearly shows how far the coast has receded in this area over time. A ship stranded on a sandbar close to shore in 1836 is now lying at a depth of 20 m, almost 4 km offshore.

The steamer "Arctic" ran aground and sank on October 5, 1860. Straight ahead of the two steamship wrecks and breakwater 41 is the wreck of the steamship "Arctic". It ran aground in a storm in 1860 along with 16 other ships on the coast between Thyborøn and Bovbjerg. The "Arctic" was furthest from land and was therefore the last ship to receive help. At this point, the rescue team was so exhausted after so many calls. that volunteers had to go out in the lifeboat. When you're with me for the second time While the survivors were making their way to shore, the boat capsized in the rough surf, killing 3 men. A total of 10 people died in this shipwreck, including the wife and daughter of a diplomat, her maid Cabin maid, a steward and two crew members as the sea entered the cabins penetrated The wreck stands neatly on its bottom today with the stem pointing towards land. The remains of the steam engine with boilers and the cylinders broken off by corrosion and powerful waves can still be seen. Below the stern of the "Atlantic" lie the remains of an old wooden ship.

The steamers "Newbridge" and "Selma" ran aground and sank on November 3, 1894 and April 1, 1901. The wrecks of the two large steamships "Newbridge" and "Selma" lie south of breakwater 41 in a water depth of 5-6 m. The "Newbridge" from Leith ran aground on November 3, 1894 in a storm with high seas. The ship was on its way from Leith to Pillau with coal. The 20-man crew were rescued by Flyvholm's lifeboat. The "Selma" ran aground on April 1, 1901 and drifted towards land where she lay aside the "Newbridge". She was driving from Middlesborough to Karlshamn with fertilizer in sacks. The crew, consisting of 17 men, was rescued in two batches by the lifeboat from Flyvholm, but the "Selma" became a wreck. The two ships are so close together that divers can walk directly from one ship to the other. In the outer wreck, the sacks of fertilizer have become stiff and hard as cement. Therefore they can withstand the very strong surf here. You can follow the ship's sides at both wrecks, there are many pieces of wreckage. In one wreck, divers can still swim in many places in the screw tunnel

A stranding that caused a stir and brought prosperity... The warship "Alexander Nevsky" ran aground and sank on September 25, 1868. The remains of the Russian warship "Alexander Nevsky", which sank in 1868, lie at this point in about 10-11 m water depth. 5 men died, but 719 men were saved, including the tsar's son, Grand Duke Alexei. The ship was built and furnished from the best materials and therefore very valuable. It was on the journey from Piraeus in Greece to St. Petersburg in Russia. The survivors were transported home on the Danish frigate Jutland. The subsequent salvage work resulted in a wave of prosperity throughout the parish that lasted for several years. From 1869 to 1910 a diving company recovered valuable material from the wreck. Today the wreck lies in the sea as a 4 m high, long wall of wreckage. They consist of large wooden frames with bronze nails, a series of boiler bases with their hearths, and quantities of steel, cannonballs, and the like. The whole is still an impressive sight for divers visiting this wreck.
