Between the 7th century BC and approximately the 7th century AD, marble was quarried and processed here on a large scale. The former quarries are now partially submerged by the sea.

The goat-footed and horned god Pan was the protector of herds and livestock and loved hunting, dancing, and playing the flute. However, people also feared his shrill cry, which spread "panic" terror. Therefore, in the 4th century BC, the guards of the Acropolis erected this sanctuary to appease the god with offerings. The semicircular hollow, carved into the rock, depicts the god playing his flute (syrinx) while watching over his flock in the center of a gable-shaped relief. Above him are a drinking vessel and two fighting goats standing on their hind legs. Vines and tables with vessels establish a connection to Dionysus, with whom Pan was closely associated. Unfortunately, the reliefs are now barely recognizable; the sketch on a tablet next to them is helpful. Source: boarding-time.de

May 2025: A couple of additions to „DemSchnitzel“. The three down-river bridges are the ones which are missing. Walking through the river takes time and added 1 hour to our walk today (finding best place to cross, boots off and on etc.). The brown stones in the riverbed are very slippery, use a stick for balance! But a beautiful walk nevertheless👍

May 2025: Three wooden bridges used to cross the river are now broken. The path is officially still closed. Alternatively, you can walk through the riverbed (knee-deep and with strong currents in places). You should have a reasonable level of balance.

Very, very rewarding. I personally climbed the summit in snow (mid-May). The last part from Skala to Mytika was absolutely not easy and requires experience hiking and climbing in less than optimal conditions, at least in snow. The summit is still highly recommended and is certainly a lot easier in season. :)
