The Wyher moated castle is located outside of Ettiswil. The castle has been a listed building since 1963. The owner of the castle is the "Schloss Wyher" foundation and since January 1st, 2012 the LuzernerHost AG has been the lessee. Castle tours are possible by prior arrangement and various rooms of the castle can be used for weddings, banquets, events, exhibitions, aperitifs... Events take place regularly. Beautifully restored castle tower with a deep preserved well and many information boards. Ideal for picnicking in the woods with fireplaces (firewood provided) and covered benches and tables. Toilet facility available. The ascent can be made on foot from "Allmendstrasse" or by bike via "Neuhaus" on the dirt road.

In the Middle Ages, Grünenberg Castle was an impressive complex with mighty walls and towers. The barons of Langenstein founded the nearby St. Urban monastery in 1194 and built up an extensive rule over time. Their descendants, the Free von Grünenberg, influenced the entire region in the 13th and 14th centuries until they sold part of their property to the city of Bern. The first excavations on the Schlossberg took place in 1949. Between 1992 and 1999 the remains of the wall were finally renovated and the important floor of the castle chapel made of St. Urban bricks was built over with a modern protective building.

Attention! Paid parking lot (machine is a bit hidden) This morning we did this disappointing tour. Good footwear is recommended, because some of it has high roots and some of it can hardly be called a hiking trail. The path leads around the lake, which is very seldom seen because of the bushes. The island with the castle is privately owned and not accessible. There is a single bench to rest along the way (there is hardly anything to see either).
