The Spreuer Bridge is the third covered wooden bridge in Lucerne, alongside the Chapel Bridge and the Court Bridge, which was demolished in the 19th century. It is called the Spreuer Bridge because in the Middle Ages, the chaff from the city mills - the waste from the grain that accrues during threshing - was the only bridge from which it was permitted to throw the chaff from the city mills over the edge into the Reuss. In the gable fields of the Spreuer Bridge, there are still 45 of the original 67 painted wooden panels with a unique dance of death. It is the most extensive and at the same time the most public of all known dances of death. The small bridge chapel "Maria auf der Reuss" is still located in the passage.

The Chaff Bridge was completed in 1408 as part of the city fortifications. Between 1626 and 1635 Kaspar Meglinger added 67 panels depicting a dance of death cycle.

In addition to the Chapel Bridge, there is another well-known wooden bridge in Lucerne. The Spreuer Bridge, a little further down the Reuss, is less well known than the world-famous Chapel Bridge. And although it is a bit shorter and less dominant in its appearance, it is in no way inferior to its big sister.

The bridge was built in 1365, making it the oldest covered wooden bridge in Europe and, with a length of 202.9 m, the second longest bridge of this type in Europe. It extends from the Lucerne Theater on the south bank to the Rathausquai and the St. Peterskapelle.
