The Espolla swamp is a reservoir that belongs to the Ribera de Sant Genís, created by a dam built in the 1970s. The swamp collects the surface water from the natural upstream drainage, which comes from the surface runoff from part of the southern slope of the Massís de l'Albera and the underground water that emerges at the level of the reservoir. In 2021, it supplied a total of 21,973 m³ (45.6% of the flow captured), while in 2022, the reservoir supplied a total of 15,184 m³ (35.5%). In both cases the volume is much lower than the maximum authorized in the concession approved by the defunct Comisaria de Aguas del Pirineo Oriental in 1972 (189,216 m³/year). The waters of the swamp are sent to the Espolla reservoir, with a capacity of 300 m³, where they first pass through a sand filter that has been put out of service. This route will take you to discover a varied and extensive area of the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà Natural Park. It passes through several municipalities that make up the park, including Castelló d'Empúries and Empuriabrava, Palau-Saverdera, Pau, Peralada and Vilanova de la Muga. You will visit places of great landscape and ecological interest, such as the two integral reserves: Llaunes and Estanys. The route will also take you through the Garrigues ponds, Sant Joan dels Erms, Rec del Molí, the Vilanova de la Muga lock and the lower part of the Muga river. It is indicated to start it from any point and do it in its entirety or in sections. A very nice corner, the small detour from the GR 92 is worthwhile. The free-range cow herd with calves and bulls on the wayside behaves peacefully.

The route is suitable for birdwatchers. You pass the bird protection reservoir Aiguamolls. In the middle of the track a very nice bird watching station. The second part of the track is exceptionally beautiful. In summer (Weigegrund) the dog has to be leashed there.
