Quite a tough climb on a bike, especially if you're carrying a load. It can't be easy going down either. Also, not a particularly scenic route, but still fascinating.

The gorge becomes less bad just after the Hermitage of San Venanzio, the Aterno river flows calmly.

Every time I emerge from the short tunnels above Raiano I stop to observe the road that goes up towards Vittorito.

The Gorges are located in the lower Aterno valley, more precisely between the agricultural plain of the Peligna basin and the Sirente-Velino Regional Park. They have been dug by the Aterno river over the millennia and offer breathtaking views.

Established with regional law of 1998, the reserve embraces a territory rich in naturalistic emergencies. Morphologically it is divided into two completely different environments: the narrow limestone gorges upstream and the wide alluvial plain downstream, where one of the rare examples of river wood existing in Central Italy has been reconstituted.
