The road through the gorge is scenically impressive. After the earthquake in April 2024, much of the infrastructure was still damaged in April 2025, with no restaurants open and no access to hiking trails or suspension bridges. Nevertheless, I highly recommend the drive through the gorge.

That's a very steep hike that requires using ropes while going down and up. At the very end you have to do bouldering and cross the river a few times! Not for newbies!!!

Then you have a lot less traffic for the next 60-90 minutes.

The name of the highlight is not very helpful, but this is the famous Taroko Gorge Highway. Amazing climb all the way to Wuling that tops at above 3000m. It is long, but not too steep (until the last section from Dayuling). Make sure to check if the road is opened as landslides are somewhat common. Go early in the morning and remember to look up from the handlebars :)

Great ascent with great views. Very demanding towards the top.

Renovated steel bridge in 2014, placed in the same spot, where the original bridge was first build in 1960 on the first highway crossing through the Taroko Gorge. After crossing the bridge on foot and entering the tunnel you can find Changchuan Shrine Trail.
