Mount Abbas Basha is a notable peak in the Sinai mountains, famous for its ruins of an unfinished palace near the summit. The Citadel of Saladin is one of the few remaining fortified structures in Cairo and one of its most striking sights. There is a huge mosque that you can visit, another large mosque for prayer, various museums, a prison, a platform from which you can have a magnificent view of the city and even see the pyramids.

The citadel is beautifully restored. However, there are no information boards, so you definitely need a guide to learn and see more than just an empty citadel. Beware of pickpockets. We were there on a Friday and it was swarming with them, we had a good guide who looked after us.

Saladin's Citadel surrounds the Mohamed Ali Mosque, but has a longer history than the mosque. From here you have a good panoramic view over Cairo to the pyramids.

The entrance to the palace is at the back on Mosque Street. The ticket counter is in a parking lot with guards standing in front of it. Entry costs 100 LE and if you want to take photos, 10 LE extra. There are a few museums to visit and a large part of the garden. Part of the garden and the palace itself cannot be visited.

The qasr Abbas Basha is the ruin of a castle erected on the gebel Abbas Pasha which culminates at 2,283 meters above sea level. In a notebook, I wrote about its surprising story: "Abbas Pasha, grandson of the great reformer Mehemet Ali of Egypt, ordered the construction of this palace, on the plans of a real fortress, for reasons mainly Won by tuberculosis, he thought that a life at altitude would be beneficial for his state of health. He died before the completion of the construction which, de facto, was interrupted. Today, only rare ruins remained. The panoramic view of Sainte-Catherine is fantastic."
