Each site includes a picnic table, fire ring, vault toilet access, and drinking water, with nightly fees ranging from $26 to $30. From January through September, many sites can be reserved in advance, while October through December is entirely first-come, first-served. To secure a spot during peak season, it’s best to book ahead through Recreation.gov.

Sheridan Lake South Shore Campground is a popular lakeside spot with direct access to the south boat ramp and the Flume Trail, and it is an excellent base for fishing, hiking, and family-friendly outdoor activities. Sites include picnic tables, fire rings, vault toilets, and drinking water; fees range from $26 to $30 per night. Several sites are reservable from January through September, while the rest operate on a first-come, first-served basis from October through December. Reservations are recommended during peak season and can be made through Recreation.gov.

Major Lake Park is a quiet lakeside spot in Hill City, perfect for a picnic, a wildlife break, or a quick detour off the Mickelson Trail. Look out for geese, deer, and the local osprey.

This beautiful dam lake was built in 1939 on the course of the Spring River. It owes its name to Philip Sheridan. A career officer in the American army, the general was sadly known for his practice of scorched earth. Both during the Civil War and during the Indian Wars. This lake has numerous infrastructures and is very pleasant, especially for its campsites.

This dam lake is the largest in the Black Hills. It was built in 1952. It offers wide opportunities for water recreation and has a campsite, picnic sites and a beach.

Pactola Reservoir is located 15 miles west of Rapid City. It is the largest and deepest reservoir in the Black Hills National Forest and has 14 miles of shoreline. There are restrooms and picnic sites available, so it is a great place to take a break.

Canyon Lake is situated inside the park of the same name and is the main highlight. There is a nice walking trail around the lake, and you will find several shelters and picnic spots to take a rest.

Horse Thief Lake is a popular destination for recreation and hikes in the area. You can explore along the Centennial #89 Trail or the Horse Thief #14 Trail. There is also a campground right next to the lake.
