Cobbett Lake is just off Highway 65 on the Grand Mesa Scenic Byway. It’s an ideal spot for a short break during your ride, with shaded areas and views of the surrounding spruce forest. The adjacent Cobbett Lake Campground offers amenities like picnic tables and vault toilets, and it’s a good option if you’re planning an overnight trip. From the campground, you can also access other lakes and several hiking trails.

Ward Lake is surrounded by prime fishing spots, campgrounds, and a few restrooms. Misquitos tend to not stick around here compared to other lowly areas which is always a bonus!

Barron Lake is surrounded by trails and a thick green apron of trees. There are some grassy shores if you want to enjoy a picnic!

Crawford State Park is best known for its fishing, as Crawford Reservoir is a stocked lake. There are also some hiking trails on the property that hug up against the edge of the water and pass by the camping and day use areas offered by the park. The trails here are some of the easier "hikes" you will find in Colorado; they feel more like easy walks along the water.

Crater Lake Trail follows the west shoreline of Overland Reservoir before veering off into Elk Park and paralleling Cow Creek. It is a beautiful and quiet hike amongst trees and meadows that may also grant you the possibility of spotting some wildlife.

If you take this trail coming from the Crag Crest Trailhead, keep in mind you will be descending to Cottonwood Lake and having to climb back on your return. If this is not for you, you can also park your car directly at the lake and take the trail in the opposite direction for as long as you like.

There are a couple of areas where the trail needs some maintenance to get around fallen trees and eroded embankments. You also pass by a church camp which feels like private property but isn't. The hike can be turned into a loop by walking on the road on the northern shore, but is is a narrow road so walking along it is not so pleasant.

This lake is somewhat secluded but every now and then the view opens up and you can clearly see the distinctive ridge of the Crag Crest trail, across from the lake.
